Organization Description: Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Our comprehensive approach to whole girl development equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and grow up healthy, educated, and independent. Girls Inc. responds to the changing needs of girls through research-based programs and public education efforts that empower girls to understand, value, and assert their rights.
The Girls Inc. national network serves over 140,000 girls through 84 affiliates. Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia & Southern New Jersey is the local affiliate serving 3,000 girls in the Greater Philadelphia region and Camden, New Jersey.
Eureka! Program Description: Girls Inc. Eureka! engages and empowers 8th-12th grade girls to see themselves as an important part of the workforce of the future. Eureka! is an intensive, five-year STEM-based program based in Philadelphia that builds students’ confidence and skills through hands-on opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math. Utilizing a whole-girl approach, the program incorporates physical fitness, personal development, college and career readiness, and paid internships. Eureka! broadens girls’ academic and career interests, encourages enrollment in advanced math and science courses, promotes positive risk-taking, and assists girls in developing professional networks. Eureka! brings girls, including many who will be first-generation college applicants, together for an intensive summer program. Eureka! continues through the school year monthly on Saturdays. The students meet for over 100 hours during the summer and an additional 40+ hours during the academic year. Beginning in 11th grade, students receive additional support through the Project Accelerate initiative.
The Girls Inc. Project Accelerate (PA) initiative speeds the entry of young women, especially women of color, into positions of influence and leadership, particularly in sectors where pay equity and gender disparities are far too prevalent. This initiative advances young women’s educational attainment and skill development, positioning them for professional leadership roles in an evolving work environment. We leverage partnerships with corporations and social impact organizations to support change towards equity in the workplace and access to meaningful careers.
Through Project Accelerate (PA), young women attain relevant leadership, social-emotional learning (SEL), and diversity, equity, and inclusion skills to help them throughout their career trajectory to:
- Graduate high school with the skills and confidence to pursue their post-secondary plans.
- Successfully navigate their college or work experience.
- Participate in valuable paid internship opportunities.
- Connect and establish relationships with mentors and coaches.
- Pursue career and postgraduate education.
- Experience rewarding and well-compensated employment opportunities.
Upon graduation from Eureka!, participants are enrolled in the Girls Inc. National Alumnae Association, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of empowerment and coaching.
