She Votes 2018

The Girls Inc. She Votes program teaches girls what they can do to be powerful, engaged citizens, have their voices heard, and someday run for office themselves. On Saturday, October 27, we held our culminating She Votes event by bringing together over 100 girls in our Out of School Time programs to hear from a panel of civic, legal, medical, and environmental leaders, participate in a mock election, and engage in activities surrounding relevant political issues.

Summer 2018

Our girls participated in five weeks of action-packed summer camp including: Mentoring Young Women In Construction (MyWIC), STEM University Camp at Drexel University, GoGirlGo!, STEAM Camp, Culture & Immersion, and Leadership & Career Exploration.

MyWIC Camp Summer 2018

The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) sponsors MyWIC (Mentoring Young Women in Construction) camp each year to provide girls with a hands-on experience to learn about the construction industry. During this six-day camp, girls explore and develop basic skills in the areas of carpentry, electrical, painting, and other trades. Girls experience the exhilaration of successfully performing tasks that promote leadership and team-building, build self-confidence, self-esteem, and boost overall self-image. During the camp, the girls are introduced to female role models who have achieved success in construction, enabling them to envision new possibilities for themselves. They partner with several local trade unions in the Philadelphia area to make this camp both educational and rewarding.

Spring 2018 Family Engagements

This Spring, we held successful family engagement events for our Seeds to Read and Rally for Reading literacy programs at Bregy Elementary, Heston Elementary, and Bayard Taylor Elementary. Family engagement events are designed to build a parent network, gain tips to promote reading at home, and educate parents on literary milestones. Families and students read directions on how to plant their own flower to grow over the summer.
