Our girls participated in five weeks of action-packed summer camp including: Mentoring Young Women In Construction (MyWIC), STEM University Camp at Drexel University, GoGirlGo!, STEAM Camp, Culture & Immersion, and Leadership & Career Exploration.
MyWIC Camp Summer 2018
The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) sponsors MyWIC (Mentoring Young Women in Construction) camp each year to provide girls with a hands-on experience to learn about the construction industry. During this six-day camp, girls explore and develop basic skills in the areas of carpentry, electrical, painting, and other trades. Girls experience the exhilaration of successfully performing tasks that promote leadership and team-building, build self-confidence, self-esteem, and boost overall self-image. During the camp, the girls are introduced to female role models who have achieved success in construction, enabling them to envision new possibilities for themselves. They partner with several local trade unions in the Philadelphia area to make this camp both educational and rewarding.
Spring 2018 Family Engagements
This Spring, we held successful family engagement events for our Seeds to Read and Rally for Reading literacy programs at Bregy Elementary, Heston Elementary, and Bayard Taylor Elementary. Family engagement events are designed to build a parent network, gain tips to promote reading at home, and educate parents on literary milestones. Families and students read directions on how to plant their own flower to grow over the summer.
2018 Strong, Smart, and Bold Breakfast
More than 400 people attended the sold-out Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey’s 16th annual Strong, Smart, and Bold Breakfast on May 2 at the Union League of Philadelphia, raising more than $120,000 for Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
In December, Discovery and BOLD Futures girls got hands-on STEM experience with K’NEX. Our first through third graders celebrated diversity at a festive tea party with The Black Doll Affair. In January, nearly 80 girls participated in a Day of Service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and built “little libraries” for local schools and communities in partnership with The Carpenters’ Apprentice School, The Finishing Trades Institute, and GEM Mechanical Services, Inc. The girls marched in solidarity in the Women’s March down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
In October, nearly 100 girls participated in She Votes, an educational day to learn all about government, civic issues, voting, and local representatives. Six Ambassadors were invited to the One Day Immersion conference in New York, NY to represent the affiliate and accept a STEM grant. Macquarie Investment Management hosted the girls at the National Squash Open to learn about the sport, meet the players, and have some fun on the court. The girls helped Free People kick off their #MovingTogether campaign at the company’s headquarters. Several Ambassadors attended the Women’s Conference and heard keynote speaker Michelle Obama present. In November, Girls Inc. girls of all ages were invited to the WICT Philly Gives Back fundraiser to introduce the honorees and network with guests.
